CHAPTER TWELVE
THE NEXT DAY, Liam walked through town with his brother Sean, who had just returned from his honeymoon the previous day. It was the end of a twelve-hour shift, and all was right with the world.
Heâd kissed Yasmin and she hadnât pulled away. Sheâd been into it in a way that you couldnât fake. And though they hadnât made plans to see each other again, he was hoping she was home and that, after he got a shower and walked Rio, they could spend a little time on her porch.
That was what mattered to him, what he liked: hanging out with the woman he cared about, on her porch.
âHey!â Sean nudged him with an elbow. âYouâre out of it.â
âSorry.â
âCheck it out.â Sean scrolled through his phone and showed Liam picture after picture of the honeymoon. It was kind of funny. Sean was a big, quiet hulk normally, but now he couldnât shut up about his family.
âDid you and Anna get any alone time, with the twins there?â
âItâs Disney, man. Thereâs babysitting. Ma and Pudge paid for a couple of nights of it as a wedding present and we made good use of the time.â
Sean looked so happy that Liam envied him, wondered why he couldnât seem to find the relationship and the happiness his brother had. Mostly, though, he was just glad for Sean. As the oldest, he had struggled the hardest over losing their mom, and heâd felt a big weight of responsibility for Liam and Cash. He deserved happiness.
âWish weâd been able to go to Disney with Mom, way back when,â Sean said. âShe wouldâve loved it. Loved taking us there.â
Liam shook his head. âI donât remember her well enough.â The truth was, he remembered his foster parents much better than his mom, but theyâd never have taken the kids to Disney. Too far, too expensive, too much chaos. Theyâd liked things controlled and predictable.
âSheâd have loved it,â Sean repeated. It seemed like his happiness as a family man had made him mellow toward the mother theyâd lost. At other times in the past, Sean had suspected their mom to have abandoned them on purpose, but these days, he focused on the good times of their childhood.
âWell.â Liam checked up and down the street and then urged Sean on. âCâmon, Iâm on patrol. But Iâm glad one of us did it. Found someone, I mean. Made a family.â
âYou can do it, too,â Sean said. âIâm not gonna lie, figuring out how to be with a woman isnât easy with how we grew up. But man, itâs worth it.â
âI can see that.â Liam nodded at Seanâs phone full of pictures. It would be worth any amount of effort to make that happen, to get that happy.
They came to the section of the boardwalk where a few rowboats were docked, glanced at each other, and stopped by unspoken agreement, looking across the bay and into the bayou.
âThink the twins have forgotten?â Liam asked. Their biological father had kidnapped them
